In fact, that’s the strongest point of this section. Lee and Trina find themselves tangled up in a possible murder, and thankfully Shapiro doesn’t turn them into best buds. Her current project is a woman named Trina, who is a little more interesting than Lee but who doesn’t seem to be drawn with a great deal of depth, though her reactions seem more real than Lee’s (especially Trina’s thoughts about Lee’s grandmother). Lee works at a quasi half-way house or rehab center where she helps mostly minority women who throw race in her face (according to Lee) every now and then. Lee is one of those liberals who doesn’t think she is racist and says she isn’t superior when she really thinks she is. The modern part of the novel is about Lee and her grandmother’s house, which has a something of mystery surrounding it. I hate it when this happens because it makes so hard to review the book. The historical fiction part of the novel is so damn good. In terms of how the modern day plot was resolved anyone can see the whodunit before the main character.
